First responders from the Delmar Volunteer Fire Department and other nearby agencies were called shortly before 2 a.m. on Monday, March 8, to the 900 block of East Estate Street in Wicomico County, when a neighbor reported that there was smoke and flames coming from a nearby home.
It took a team of 50 firefighters more than two hours to get the two-alarm fire under control, but not before it caused an estimated $100,000 in damage, though officials made note that the structure was vacant at the time, and hasn't been inhabited in almost 20 years.
Delmarva electric has disconnected power to the Structure. It is unclear if there were smoke alarms present inside the vacant home.
The fire began on the first floor, according to investigators, though the cause remains under investigation.
